a combination ritual/ workshop/ reading/ dialogue with black feminist performance artists Gabrielle Civil and Ra Malika Imhotep celebrating the release of Civil's latest book Experiments in Joy. Civil’s Experiments in Joy celebrates black feminist collaborations and solos in essays, letters, performance texts, scores, images, and more.
The exhibition will showcase six visual artistic reflections on the themes of Black Feminism + Study + Spirituality submitted by attendees and community members who work across a range of artistic mediums in addition to the theory maps and portraits from the year-long project. The goal of this exhibition is to provide a platform for the artists in our community to showcase work that attends to the particular intersections of race, gender, art and theory.
While the Bay Area is home to several collective arts initiatives that feature the work of black women, we are of the belief that the particular work of tending to the intellectual and spiritual offerings of black women is crucial in this time and place. We hope to reach a diverse and intergenerational community of local artists invested in the work of venerating and learning with black womxn. We hope that by promoting the convergence of visual art and black feminism, we spark a trend that illuminates, rather than obscures the role black womxn have played and continue to play in shaping our social, cultural, and political imaginaries.

For this show at The Well, we are recreating the very DIY spirit of our gatherings where we taped quotes to walls, got on the floor and brainstormed together. We invite you to engage with the post-it poster on the back right white wall with your responses to some of the quotes we’ve shared. For those of you who would like to engage with the invocations further, we’ve made a little booklet that you can purchase.
